This position performs technology, market and engineering cost analysis, with an emphasis on wind energy technologies, systems, and infrastructure. Work carried out will support R&D and decision activities within the Wind Program through the use of analysis methodologies such as economic feasibility, market transformation, risk, portfolio balance, and cost-versus-benefit. Analyst will be expected to use engineering principles to design novel approaches for systems and infrastructure analysis.
Combines broad, in-depth technical knowledge of wind technologies and the wind industry with strong economic analysis capabilities.

Performs engineering/economic analyses of wind systems and electric transmission, in cooperation with the research community, to determine R&D focus areas.

Documents work in detailed technical memos and internal milestone reports; publishes and presents key results in peer-reviewed journals and at regional, national, and international scientific meetings and conferences.

Maintains exemplary attention to environmental, safety, and health issues. Supports the development of annual operating plans and assists with strategic planning efforts.
Relevant Bachelor's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Basic knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
Experience in the development and evaluation of applied technology aimed at entering the marketplace. Previous experience with material use analysis in wind turbines and systems.
Multidisciplinary research exposure to wind energy systems, especially those related to the development of cost-effective systems for utility-scale applications. Some experience with computer modeling of energy markets.

A building system engineering research position is now available in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Electricity, Resources & Building Systems Integration Center. NREL is the nation’s primary laboratory for research, development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies. This position will support residential buildings research in existing and new homes and will report directly to the Group Manager for Residential Buildings. The engineer's activities will include research focusing on the analysis of efficiency and performance tradeoffs, and the development and evaluation of advanced system concepts required to produce increasingly efficient homes and communities. Key technical approaches include fundamental analysis, system and building energy simulations, laboratory research, full-scale studies in research buildings, and development of initial applications in field studies with industry partners. The engineer will also be involved with systems engineering research work.
Relevant Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.

General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.

The position requires knowledge and experience with the physics of building science in existing and new buildings with experience working in a team-based research environment. Applicant should be skilled in problem solving techniques including definition of specific research questions, use of analytical and experimental techniques, and uncertainty analysis. Applicant should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication capabilities, prioritization skills, crosscutting technical project management skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills and teaming skills. Applicant should have experience using system simulation and analysis tools such as Matlab, EnergyPlus, DOE2, and other building energy simulation software.
Preferred qualifications include a PhD or Master’s Degree in physics, mathematics, or engineering, with a BS in science, engineering, or equivalent. The successful candidate is a self starter with the ability to carry out research and technical project management responsibilities as part of a highly motivated, crosscutting research team. Knowledge of residential energy efficiency technologies, including in the areas of space conditioning, hot water, occupant interaction, building enclosure, appliances and lighting are also preferred. Experience with the residential construction industry is a plus.

The primary job is to support the Center for Inverse Design through the application of high through-put materials science both experimental and theory for the development of new solar absorber materials and new transparent conducting oxides. This position will apply these approaches to new materials discovery in the broad class of oxides, sulphides and nitrides.
Primary duties are to develop novel materials through applying high-throughput methodologies relevant to solar conversion technologies. This will also include the development of novel deposition and characterization tools for enabling the approach. It is expected that this approach will be applicable to many new opto-electronic materials and as a consequence will develop substantial new funding sources.
Relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated skills as a leader and follower in a team environment, excellent writing skills for papers and proposals and excellent presentation skills.
PhD in Materials Science, Physics and Chemistry with specific experience in opto-electronic materials growth and characterization. It is highly desirable to have some experience in materials theory as the a number of our current and future interactions closely partner theory and experimental teams. Some experience at developing and articulating new technical ideas is desirable as proposal development will be a part of the job.
