My client has an immediate need for a Reliability Engineer in the Renewable Energy Business Unit. As a key member of the Product Development Team, the Reliability Engineer will have the challenging role of assuring long term reliability of sophisticated energy conversion equipment in very harsh outdoor environments using systematic Design for Reliability (DfR), root cause analysis of field failures, and implementation of corrective actions.

Responsibilities:
Develop a deep understanding of PV inverter design principles
- Operating environment
- Functions of the product
- Cabinet design
- Cooling system design
- Power electronics design
- User interface design

Prioritize reliability risk and identify critical components
- Component-by-component stress vs. capability analysis
- Margin and tolerance analysis
- Parts count or complexity analysis
- Failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA)
- Fault tree analysis
- Supplier quality assessment

Perform reliability analysis for critical components
- Identify possible failure modes (physics of failure)
- Use reliability analysis to generate probabilistic life-stress models
- Set quantitative allowable stress and derating requirements to ensure high reliability with high confidence

Work with the product design team to develop a product that meets reliability requirements
- Mechanical design
- Thermal and airflow design
- Electronic design

Verify product reliability at the component and product level
- Functional testing
- Accelerated life testing (ALT)
- Highly accelerated life testing (HALT)

Document and report DfR results and remaining risks
Work with the manufacturing team to ensure reliability-critical manufacturing work is properly executed
Lead root cause and corrective action processes
- Determine root cause of failures
- Determine and drive implementation of corrective actions

Drive continuous reliability improvement and maintenance
- Define and lead reliability improvement programs
- Develops and executes qualification strategy for critical new parts and new manufacturers of those parts.

Skills:
- Must be a multidisciplinary engineer or scientist with experience and/or knowledge in electricity and magnetism, heat transfer, and mechanics.
- Must have sufficient education and experience in physics and chemistry to identify and mathematically model failure modes for a wide variety of electrical and mechanical components
- Must have sufficient knowledge and experience in applied mathematics, probability, and statistics to perform classic reliability analysis and modeling
- Must be familiar with reliability measures such as population distributions, failure rates, and MTBF
- Must have strong problem-solving abilities
- Must be able to communicate with and become a valued member of a product development team
- Must be familiar with electronic-product operation, safety in use, and standard electrical test equipment
- Must be organized and be able to conceive and carry out a detailed action plan to closure
- Should be able to clearly summarize and communicate a wide range of technical topics to a wide variety of audiences

Experience:
Desirable:
- 5-10 Product development or support experience
- 1-10 years of reliability engineering experience
- Published work in the field of reliability engineering

Education:
- Degree in a relevant Physical Science or Engineering discipline, MS or PhD preferred
Desirable:
- Certified Reliability Engineer
- Certified 6-sigma or equivalent statistical, problem-solving methodology
