Job Details:
Advanced-level engineering, project management, and laboratory operations position,
developing and
directing engineering and R&D projects in distributed and renewable energy, energy
efficiency, and having responsibility for project completion and work delivery. Maintain
and develop advanced
engineering and testing laboratories and capabilities at existing and future NREL test
facilities, while working to ensure functionality for new facilities under construction.
Leads engineering testing and R&D activities for the Electricity, Resources, and
Building Systems Integration Center; works independently in support of center management.
National level of recognition in technical / engineering fields and considered an
innovator in engineering and project work. This role will develop and implement a business
model and business plan for the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) including
representing all NREL centers and offices with an interest in the capabilities of the
ESIF.
Job Duties
• Serve as the principal point of contact for the Electricity, Resources, and
Building Systems
Integration Center and other Research Centers with the ESIF design-build team and
NREL’s Campus
Infrastructure office to ensure that the technical objectives incorporated in the design
are
realized. The ESIF will be a new 184,000-square-foot laboratory specially designed to
accommodate
the critical engineering, testing, optimization, and verification research needed to
address issues
related to integrating large quantities of renewable and efficiency technologies into the
existing energy infrastructure.
• Lead development of an operations plan for ESIF that anticipates maintenance and
capital equipment needs, and details how the facility will be managed including how
experiments will be prioritized. Work with Laboratory programs to identify how work will
be funded in the ESIF. The plan will also detail how NREL researchers and external
partners will access laboratory capabilities.
• Project management and coordination of technical aspects of testing distributed and
renewable energy systems and the integration of these systems into electric power
systems.
• Coordination of experimental tests, development of models and verification testing
and analysis
of modeled and fielded systems.
• Oversees reports on technical work and input to technical publications and
presentations. Publishes results in technical journals/conference proceedings; presents
work at conferences,
symposia, and review meetings.
• Personally follows and leads other staff in all Environment, Safety, and Health
policies and
procedures to ensure and maintain a safe working environment. Work with laboratory point
of contacts to maintain Safe Operating Procedures(SOPs) for all laboratory space.
Required Education and Experience
Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant
education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant
education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant
education/experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Expert understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices
and standards. Expert knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Often exhibits
an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness.
Superior interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.
Additional Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
Ten years of relevant engineering and technical experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctoral degree in electrical engineering or other relevant technical discipline, or
equivalent relevant experience. Applies broad and in-depth knowledge of engineering
procedures and techniques. Demonstrated leadership in areas of team, task, or project lead
responsibilities.
Works independently. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication (oral and
written) skills. Experience in laboratory construction and project management of complex
and/or impact projects. Experience in laboratory operations and in developing laboratory
testing capability in energy systems. Experience in designing, testing, and researching
electrical power systems. Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred. Electric
utility experience would be positively viewed.
