Windfarm Operations Manager - SAAS (software-as-a-service), based in Belgium, ref 1011-21



Our Consultancy client is recognised as a leading independent authority in renewable energy (including wind), energy efficiency and energy strategy and their clients include major technology manufacturers, project developers, energy utilities, architectural offices, construction companies and maintenance teams, as well as regional and international public authorities. The company’s drive to invest in expertise and cultivate creativity powers its aspiration and this vacancy is linked to a software-as-a-service they are currently developing.



Period December 2010 to April 2011: Wind operations expert (REFEX)



Mission: guarantee that SynaptiQ is in line with wind farm operations domain requirements



Tasks & responsibilities:

- Integrated in several SynaptiQ pilot projects (ideally 2). Each pilot project aiming at implementing SynaptiQ early releases on an actual wind farm operated by the client



Define needs:

Manage requirements definition phase (Decides on approach, planning, who to work with at client’s side)



Main contact person of the client / Manages the client during the pilot project:

- Works with client’s operations stakeholders (asset manager, operations manager, dispatcher, WTG Eng, Elec eng) to identify issues/needs

- Describes and documents issues/needs and their root causes in an analytical way

- Quantify impact of issues/needs on stakeholder’s efficiency

- Facilitates collection of technical information (coordinates requests to client’s staff, add domain knowledge to make info understandable)

- Evaluate and collect info on current information system (available info/features, integration needs)



Participate in solution design:

- Translate issues/needs into domain requirements together with product manager and functional analyst (how to fulfil the domain need)

- Prioritize requirements according evaluated impacts à contribute to release planning by determining what should be delivered first

- Provide all his domain knowledge to product manager and functional analyst while designing the product features (indicators, alarms, status, MTS/SS Scada)

- Participate in analysis of collected information with product manager and functional analyst



Lead release delivery and review to client:

- Coordinate release implementation with product team and client team

- Evaluate feature and participate in User Acceptance Tests before release delivery with the product team

- Leads release review with client on site (organize with client’s staff, coordinate client’s test plan, collect/document feedback)

- Review client feedback with product team and participate in corrective actions



Reporting:

- Reports to the product manager in the frame of this pilot project.

- This period will be used as proof period. If positive, the job will automatically evolve towards operations manager for wind domain





Skills/experience required:

- At least 1 year of experience in wind power plant operations

- People management experience is a must (at least 2 years)

- Project management experience is a must (at least 2 years)

- Experience with projects involving IT systems (ERP, MMS,…) implementation/deployment/usage is a must

- Experience in power plant asset management is a major plus (contract management, supplier management, KPI)

- Experience in operation or maintenance of electric components such as transformer, generators is a plus

- Electrical/electro-technical engineer (Engineer in mechanics also possible)

- Structured

- Able to analyze a situation (issue, cause, stakeholders, related impacts)



Timing & workload:

- Can start as of first pilot project starts with client and actual wind farm

- 100% of time during the first 5 months if 2 pilot projects. Then workload will decrease and allow to switch to Operations manager for wind domain.



Location:

Based in Brussels. Frequently on client’s site so can potentially be abroad for several weeks.



Period April 2011 to undefined: Operations manager for Wind operational services





Additional information:

The operations team will contain the support engineers AND the project managers.

In the current document project managers are still reporting to product managers but this should be moved into the operations team and all report to the operations manager.

This means that operations team will take over from the moment a SynaptiQ contract is signed (new client project à project manager, usual client support à support engineer). This makes the scope of the operations manager much wider with complex projects to manage.



Other important dimension to add: the operations manager should have responsibilities in supporting the sales process. Having a person with such good domain knowledge, regular feedback of wind plant issues and very good knowledge of the product is a powerful stake for the sales force. So this person will probably travel quite regularly with sales in case of important client’s meetings.
